Introduction

The Livery Lenten Prison Walks is an initiative that was conceived and is being arranged by Alderman & Sheriff Robert and Shrieval Consort Elspeth Hughes-Penney that supports Sheriffs’ & Recorder’s Fund— a long-established fund that works closely with the Probation Service to help recent prison leavers as well as offer grants to prison-based charitable schemes which work towards the rehabilitation of prison leavers.

2026 Livery Lenten Prison Walks

Monday 23rd February 2026

HMP Pentonville

​This walk will be led by Ian Blakeman, Prison Group Director – London Prisons and previous prison governor of HMP Pentonville. Accompanying walkers will include Rev Jo Davies, previously Prison Chaplain HMP Pentonville, Luke Carlson of London City Mission, The Sheriffs of London and their consorts.

​• 8:15 am – coffee and pastries – generously provided by Social Pantry – at the Old Bailey, Warwick Square entrance, off Warwick Lane
• 9:00 am – walk starts
• 10:15-10:30 am – arrival at HMP Pentonville
• 10:30-1:00 pm – itinerary below

​This is the shortest walk at just over 2.5 miles. After leaving the Old Bailey we will walk up Giltspur Street, past St Bart’s Hospital, through Smithfield’s meat market and up St John’s Street, crossing Pentonville Road, with Angel tube station, left onto Liverpool Road with the Angel Wings sculpture on the right, left down Tolpuddle St, through Culpepper Park with its community garden, cutting up to Copenhagen Street, right up Matilda Street up to and around Thornhill Square into Cres Street, left onto Offord Road then right onto the busy Caledonian Road past the Breakout Café on your left with the entrance to the prison on your right.

​10:30 am arrival and check in, meet with prison governor, Simon Drysdale, tour of the prison including the neurodiverse unit and ending in the chapel with a bespoke session with Ricardo Lafueto- Dyer’s Time4Change

​12 noon – Liberty Kitchen (a prison charity which trains prisoners in catering skills) serve wraps for lunch (Donation requested)

​1:00 pm departure

• Caledonian Road tube – Piccadilly Line – 5 minutes walk
• King’s Cross St. Pancras – 10 minute walk
• Bus stop next to Prison with buses towards London Bridge (17), Crouch End (91), King’s Cross (259) and Angel Islington (274)

Monday 2nd March 2026

HMP Wandsworth

​This walk will be led by Honorary Secondary of the Old Bailey and organiser of the Old Bailey’s Knife Crime Outreach Programmes, Fiona Adler, . Accompanying walkers will include member(s) of staff of HMP Wandsworth, Rev Jo Davies, previously Prison Chaplain, of HMP Pentonville, Luke Carlson of London City Mission, The Sheriffs of London and their consorts.

​• 8:15 am – coffee and pastries and birthday cake at the Old Bailey, Warwick Square entrance, off Warwick Lane
• 9:00 am – walk starts
• 12 noon – arrival at HMP Wandsworth
• 12:00-2:00 pm – itinerary in prison

​Walking south down Old Bailey, crossing into Pageantmaster Court into Black Friars Lane past Apothecaries’ Hall on your left, cross Queen Victoria Street, past Blackfriars Station, over Blackfriars Bridge, right onto Upper Ground crossing into Belvedere Road, cutting through Jubilee Gardens on right, past The London Eye, onto the Thames Path, past the Covid Memorial Wall, under Westminster Bridge, past the Houses of Parliament, under Lambeth Bridge, onto Albert Embankment, through Albert Embankment Gardens back onto the Thames Path, past MI6 and the Maritime Insurers Building, under Vauxhall Bridge, right onto Wandsworth Road for 1.2 miles, past Nine Elms on the right and Larkhall Park on the left, after Wandsworth Road station and Brayburne Avenue and BEFORE the handyman shop there is a tiny, easy to miss (we missed it!) stairway with handrails that leads to Matrimony Place, walking past Eden Nature Garden on your left and St Paul’s Church and a community garden on your left into Rectory Grove then Old Town, past Clapham Fire Station on left, into Clapham Common North Side, through Clapham Common, along Broomwood Road, across Wandsworth Common to HMP Wandsworth.

​12 noon arrival and check in, lunch, split into two groups tour the prison, meeting back in the Event space with the Prison Council, which is made up of prisoners, where they can share their stories.

​2:00 pm departure in prison vans to London Victoria (with various public transport options)

• Tooting Bec – Northern – 15 minutes walk
• Wandsworth Common Train Station – Southern rail – 15 minutes walk
• Bus stop next to Prison with buses towards Clapham Junction (219), Waterloo (77)

​This walk will be led by The Chair of The Sheriffs’ & Recorder’s Fund, Lady Hilary Russell. Accompanying walkers tbc, The Sheriffs of London and their consorts.

​This walk will be led by HHJ. Richard Marks K.C. Common Serjeant of London Accompanying walkers The Chair of The Sheriffs’ & Recorder’s Fund, Lady Hilary Russell tbc, The Sheriffs of London and their consorts, the Governor, staff members and prison leavers of Isis.

​• 8:15 am – arrival at HMP Isis
• 8:15 am – 12:30 pm – prison itinerary
• 12:30 pm – walk starts
• 2:30 pm – lunch stop – Liberty Kitchen’s pop up (Donation requested)
• 5:30 pm – glass of fizz or cup of tea at the Old Bailey, Warwick Square entrance, off Warwick Lane

​Crossing over Western Way, taking the little roads onto Cycleway 14 which runs along the Thames, after just under a mile crossing the Thames using the Woolwich Foot Tunnel, taking Store  Road into Factory Road past London City Airport and then North Woolwich Road, past Pontoon Dock, Silvertown and the Excel Centre, into Dock Road, past the Docklands, over path running  alongside Lower Lea Crossing, past Bow Creek Ecology Park on the right and Trinity Buoy Wharf,  the Thames and beyond that North Greenwich on the left, into Blackwall Way, past East India on the right, crossing Aspen Way onto path north of Naval Row, over Blackwall Tunnel Arniston Way by Poplar High St Refreshment Stop – Liberty Kitchen pop up, continue along Poplar High St into Pennyfields one West India Dock Road onto Cycle  Superhighway Three, then into Narrow St, over Limehouse Link, continuing along Narrow St with the Thames on left, (alternate route that we took was to take Cycle Superhighway Three just north of Cabel St through Whitechapel and past Jack the Ripper Museum to Tower Hill) onto The Highway, over Rotherhithe Tunnel, through King Edward Memorial Park, back onto the Highway, past Shadwell Basin on left, through St George’s gardens and Swedenborg Gardens, along East Smithfield past the Tower of London into Tower Hill, Lower Thames St, Upper Thames St, Castle Baynard St, up to St Paul’s, St Paul’s churchyard right into Ave Maria Lane into Warwick Lane, left into Warwick Square.

​8:15 am arrival and check-in
8:30 am – 11:30 am attending a Reverse Mentoring session where young men in the prison and those that have experienced prison share their stories with prison officers.
11:30 am – 12:30 pm refreshments

​Elizabeth line to Woolwich

​Then: Abbeywood bus 244 (12 minutes) or 472 (7 minutes) to Princess Alice; or Bexleyheath bus (8 minutes) to Nathan Way/Eastern Way

HMP Brixton

• 9:00 am – walk starts
• 11:00 am – arrival at HMP Brixton
• 11:00 am-2:00 pm – prison intinerary

​Walking south down Old Bailey, crossing into Pageantmaster Court into Black Friars Lane past Apothecaries’ Hall on your left, cross Queen Victoria Street, past Blackfriars Station, over  Blackfriars Bridge, right onto The Cut, past the Young Vic, crossing Waterloo Road onto Baylis Road, crossing West Minster Bridge Road onto Hercules Road, crossing Lambeth Road, Sail St, Newport St, Vauxhall Walk (this part felt a bit edgy), across Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens to Goding  St, to Vauxhall Station, cross into South Lambeth Road (although big road, wide pavement), right onto Clapham Road, at Clapham North tube station left into Bedford Road, crossing into Kings Avenue, left into Lyham Road, walk down passing Ramilles Close, a few meters down there is a little, easy to miss, cut through doorway, into carpark and past Pact charity and Clink check-in then entrance on right.

​11:00 am arrival and check in, meeting prisoners, tour of prison, including seeing XO Barbers and meeting the prisoners engaged in this initiative.

​12:30-2:00 pm – lunch at the Clink restaurant with prisoners and the co-founder of the Clink, Kevin McGraph (additional cost)

• Bus stop next to Prison with buses towards Elephant & Castle (333), Holborn (133), Camberwell (45)

​This walk will be led by the Deputy Governor of HMP Downview

​• 10:00 am – arrival at HMP Downview
• 10:00 am – 12:30 pm -prison itinerary
• 12:30 pm – walk starts
• 2:30 pm refreshment stop – Liberty Kitchen’s pop up – near The Ravensbury, 260 Croydon Road,  Mitcham CR4 4JA (Donation requested)
• 5 pm glass of fizz or cup of tea at the Old Bailey, Warwick Square entrance, off Warwick Lane
• 6:00 pm – end

​Banstead Road South, Banstead Road, Cambridge Road, Short Road, Nightgale Road, London Road, into Carsholten Road, Commonside West, back onto London Road, into Mitcham Road, right onto Southcroft Road then left onto Rectory Lane, Cycleway 5, Cavendish Road, left onto Englewood Road, cross road onto Clapham Common.

​Transport from Clapham Common by hackney carriages to the Old Bailey.

​10:00 am arrival and check in, tour of prison, including Fine Cell Works and Making for Change prison charities, time with prison council, early lunch, depart 12:30 pm

​Trains from Victoria/City Thames Link/London Bridge to Sutton (30 minutes), number 80 bus to Belmont, High Down and Downview (8 minutes)
